Where to start kitchen remodeling?

Picking your style is the very first step for your kitchen design project. Are you looking for a modern style or you are a little more classic? You have to answer these questions to decide what your style is. You will be able to see different styles and it will influence you along the way. Having an idea of what you're looking for is going to give you a strong start for your remodeling project. If you're talking about kitchens; there are modern, classic, contemporary,  traditional, or farmhouse styles. Choosing one of these styles will shape your project. Not only does your style and personality matter, but your cooking style is important because when you're designing your kitchen you should look at how you live and cook, how you serve. Those are the things that we need to know to give you that space and give you that design that is going to make you happy at the end of the project. That's why we're trying to make it as detailed as possible: to give you the best design to make you happy through the years. If you don't have a lot of ideas about how to start or you don't really know where to start, you can go to our website and you will see our gallery. We have major kitchen cabinet dealer brands; for example Canyon Creek or J&K Cabinetry. You will see ideas on our website, so you can generate different design details,  which you can share with us on our design appointments. If you get ideas and you have a feeling about what you're looking for, that is going to help you a lot when you're just starting your kitchen project. Having those ideas in mind is always important.

Our showroom location is convenient. It's 10-15 minutes from Seattle for those who are following us from Seattle. Our showroom has a wide range of options of selection. It's not an office! We have our displays you can see, you can touch, and you can actually experience what you are getting before starting your project.

When you come to our showroom for the first time, we will sit down and talk about what you have in mind and what you're looking for. These facts are going to shape your project, so we will try to find a definition with you.

How much does kitchen remodeling cost?

When you are talking about a kitchen remodeling project, what's affecting the cost? When you are looking at those cabinetry types there are also additional details such as door types, construction and finishing on wood species, and countertop. So you need to think in detail to understand what you're looking for. If you're talking about a $100 budget, every $100 that you spend, you will spend $32 for your kitchen cabinets; and your countertop is going to be $15-20 (depending on your countertop area that number can vary). Installation is another cost that you need to add to your budget. When you look at your installation, it is not only your countertop installation or kitchen cabinet installation, there is also lighting and electricity. You might consider redoing your floors or your backsplashes. There are optional changes; such as layout changes. These are the factors that will affect your budget. When you're looking at your project as a whole, you will see that your kitchen cabinets, countertop, and installation are going to be more than 50% of your overall budget. The other half is going to be the remaining part.

Different door types are always going to affect your total budget. According to your design, you might want to change the type of the door so this process includes workmanship over this door. That's why it's going to create some sort of difference in terms of pricing. There are different prices and price levels, so you're not deciding on your final design just by looking at the prices. That style is going to affect the total budget. That's what we're trying to emphasize these differences.

These door styles are a variable. When you're looking at your overall remodeling budget and secondarily door construction, there are different door constructions to consider. For instance: full overlay and partial overlay. What is a full overlay and partial overlay? It's easy to understand. When you are facing your cabinets, if you see the frame between your doors it's a partial overlay. Full overlay cabinets are a little more expensive or, in other words, partial overlay cabinets are a little more economical in comparison. If you're looking at a contemporary style, it's a good way to go with the full overlay; but if you're a traditional person, or if you are looking at a classic style, you can not create a classic look with the full overlay. You can not create your dream kitchen by just looking at your budget. It's your personal preferences and your personality.

There is also a factor, which is important: the workmanship. When you look at a natural door and a painted door, you will see that they have different costs related to that process. For instance: natural cabinets don't need any extra work on them but painted cabinets need another workmanship to give the look that you want. Innately, it is going to increase the cost a little bit.

Another thing is the wood species. There are different styles with price levels. For example maple, cherry, or red oak. It is regularly used for rental units or basements. There are slight differences between those species and stains. Maple, cherry, and hickory are popular lately. These kinds of things will affect your choice and style so your budget will change as a conclusion of your choices.

'Finish' is a different part of your remodeling project. When you look at the finish, it includes different cabinetry and different styles. We have different brands that we are proud to work with such as Canyon Creek. You can see different door types, different door construction with different finishes, and loose species.

Cabinets are a major part of your budget but there is another star alongside the cabinets: the countertop. There are two different countertop models that we can mention: natural stone and engineered stone. What is the difference? The main difference is you take the natural stone and engineer it, then you create another material by getting rid of all the disadvantages of the natural stone. So engineered stone is like an upgraded model compared to natural stone. When you're looking at the pattern in natural stone, you look at your slab. But the engineered stone has a consistent pattern, it's going to be different patterns in every slab. The quartz is pretty much like a consistent pattern. If you don't like the computerized type of pattern, or specifically: If you want to see the natural look, then granite is going to be the best selection for you. However, if you are looking for a little more durability then you look at the maintenance. You don't need high maintenance for quartz but you need to seal your granite on a regular basis. Chemical resistance is important. For instance: you put a lemon on the top of your marble countertop and that marble is going to absorb it, then you will see that staying for a long time. Yet the quartz, sintered stone, or on any kind of engineer stone, don't absorb much. That's why it's easier to maintain. When you look at the price: the granite is more economical just because it's a natural stone, but the quartz is a processed stone. That's why it affects the price a little more and creates some sort of difference by the square footage. We always suggest to our customers that if you don't have a really huge countertop area, going with the granite is not going to give you a major difference.

Backsplash, Flooring & Accessories

It's not only the countertop or kitchen cabinets you need to consider; your backsplash area or your flooring are important, too. We will mention a little bit more about the bathroom remodeling here. But when you're going back to your kitchen remodeling project, your backsplash should complement your countertop, and you should create some sort of match with your flooring, as well. For instance: imagine a kitchen with a white floor, white kitchen cabinets, white tiles, white backsplash, and white paint. It doesn't give you any contrast, so you should create some sort of contrast and include that in your design details. If you like white cabinets, you can go with a darker countertop material that is going to give you a nice contrast or your backsplash could be a combination of white and black. It's going to create the feeling of blending together.

The last thing is the handles. There are different handle companies that have many different styles. If you are a detailed person, if you want something that complements your overall design, you can go through the catalogs of those brands; or we can show you in our showrooms. We can show you tons of different models and live examples.

Sometimes our clients go through a total renovation. It's a kitchen and bathroom together. In this case, we need rough measurements. Same for the kitchen cabinets and your bathroom. Just bring us your rough measurements, and we will show you some samples and continue according to your decisions.

The good thing about designing your kitchen on the computer is you are able to see your finished look before the project is completed. We designed your kitchen on the computer with a 3D program that is going to give you the renders to view before you finalize your decisions and design.

How to remodel kitchen cabinets?

It is a big question about how many days you will be out of your kitchen when you start from day one. It is a big project and a big change for your home.

The first step is going to be creating your overall budget. You should come and talk to our kitchen and bath designer first to understand what you will like and what you need to be prepared for. We can do that in-person in our showroom or we can meet you on Zoom, as a complimentary service. We will sit down and talk about your design details, your budget, and everything you should expect from the process. When starting your project, you should have some ideas about what type of kitchen you want. Then the second step is starting to design your kitchen. Before designing, you should be sure about the type and the style of your kitchen. After that, it's time for you to confirm your project, and we finalize the estimate. How can we finalize the project without the correct measurements? Of course, you're not an expert at measuring your kitchen. We don't want (or expect) you to give the exact measurements, but we need the precise measurements and we need to know what the exact measure is going to be before finalizing the project. That's what we do in the second phase. In the third phase, we order your cabinets after your confirmation. Depending on the cabinetry type and style that you're looking for, it's going to give us a different lead-time. Some cabinet models we don't carry in our regular stock, so we will order from our providers. It could take 2 to 3 weeks, or 4 weeks or more. We need you to wait for the cabinetry to be produced, and then it's going to be ready for installation. Depending on your design details, which you don't really know at the beginning of the project that is going to be determined after you finalize your design, we will be able to give you a lead time. When you have your cabinets in your home, ready to install, we will be ready to assemble. Then we template your countertops. When the countertop is being processed and produced, we install the wall cabinets. Then the countertop team will come and install the countertop. Depending on your selection, your backsplashes might be installed after your countertop; because you need to wait for your countertop to be installed to install your backsplash. The flooring is going to be the first thing that you put in even before your cabinetry. We do all these things so you don't need to worry about what's going to be first, or ask what is going to be next? We will give you that information and we will be guiding you along the way. The fifth phase is going to be the countertop installation. We also add the accessories installation, like the backsplash or that kind of thing, which are going to be considered in the fifth step. The last step is simply enjoying it.

Congratulations! You have your kitchen ready. It's time to enjoy your personalized space. It's always good to show off a little bit, especially when you have a new kitchen! Invite your friends and family members over to show what you have because that's a major upgrade to your living space and now it is your own taste. These are all six steps from one to six.

Book Your Appointment & Save

We want you to save! That's why we decided to give you some incentives for this month. We have a great financing deal, you will get zero-interest if you pay your kitchen off in 12 to 18 months.
